Well, after 10 weeks of racing locally, I decided to officially enter into my first BMX national held in Rock Hill, SC.
Yep, after only 10 weeks in the sport I decide to take my chances on the big stage. As Barry Nobles said with a big smile jokingly, "I see you jumped in with both feet." Yes, as crazy I thought I was, I was immediately baptized into another level of BMX that had the same atmosphere as a NASCAR race event but better with dads, moms and kids zooming around on bikes.
Happy to be at my first big race, I was trying to calmly take it all in. Reminding myself saying in my head, "You got this." Yeah, that was until I laid eyes on that starting hill. I've never seen a start hill that high up. I asked myself "What the hell I was thinking?" Seeking the confidence needed, I managed to keep my feet moving while I gathered and pushed with the herd of riders up the hill during scheduled gate practice for the older riders. After four laps, I was semi confident that could handle the task but not at my normal pace.
The next day came and it was race day. I was excited but because of the size of the event it felt like my first day in BMX all over again but I knew I had to get my first race out of my system to settle myself down. When the moto posted, I was in number 174 with gates 4 and 8. No sweat, I thought.
My first race came, I did the usual, warmup and hurry up and wait for my shot. With anticipation, my time came and before I noticed the gate dropped and I was off! I got off slow as hell getting pinched inside and loosing my value position immediately. The race went by in a blur but I proceeded with caution not really demonstrating that natural fight I typically display at one of my local tracks back home. I came in 4th place. Not bad, I thought but wishing I had the confidence to push harder but I felt so unfamiliar with the track.
The good news I thought; I stayed upright on my bike and I did not ride off in the ditch. So, I was relieved and was looking forward to my second moto however, I was late to the gate and missed my race. Yep! I missed my second moto. Way to go Jason!
Despite all, I had a great time and once again, I am smiling. . I love the sport of BMX and I am looking forward to my next national race hopefully in Louisiana in April.
