In BMX racing’s hey-day, rider image played an important part for Factory teams - with BMX companies fighting over sponsoring the best BMX hero to use in their advertising and branding. One of the prime examples of a talented young racer who had that “complete package” - was factory Torker’s superstar - Jason Jensen.
Known by many nicknames - but mostly as “Juicy Jaws,” Jensen was the quintessential Southern California racer, with long blond hair and a surfer’s tan. For more than half a decade, he did more for his sponsor than just win races. His was the image of a fun-loving BMX kid that everyone wanted to be.
That’s not to say, he didn’t win a lot of races!Between 1978 and 1983, Juicy Jaws won the World Championships in Indy and became ABA’s National No.2 Amateur in 1980.
That same year, he won the Grands in three different sanctions - NBA, UBR and ABA.
Jensen also toured Europe with Torker founder Steve Johnson, and appeared in TV commercial for Kool Aid and Wheaties. Jensen, along with fellow Hall of Famer Kyle Fleming, were the two youngest racers to have full-on Oakley Factory Pilot status.
Having appeared on the covers of every major BMX mag, J.J. was the envy of every young racer around the globe - with articles mentioning his pit-side antics each month in the hallowed pages of BMX Action, BMX Plus and Super BMX. It wasn’t long before the names Jason Jensen and Torker Bicycles would become synonymous - and he would eventually have signature frames with Torker, as well as JAG.
Still to this day, any young kid who is in the BMX spotlight - getting attention from PULL magazine and factory teams, is often compared to being the modern-day Jason Jensen.
Back in the early 80’s, Jason and his father set the bar high. ...a bar that today’s kids are still attempting to reach.
