HOUSTON, Texas (March 23, 2020)-- Following a conference call between cycling’s governing body the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Harris County - Houston Sports Authority (Sports Authority) regarding the global outbreak of COVID-19 and amidst the current travel restrictions, the 2020 UCI BMX World Championships scheduled for May 26-31 at Rockstar Energy Bike Park in Houston, Texas will be postponed.
Janis Burke, CEO of the Sports Authority issued the following statement today:
"The health and safety of everyone associated with the event - athletes, officials, spectators, and volunteers - are our number one concern and of the utmost importance to us. We have been engaging on an ongoing basis with public health experts, government agencies, and any partners involved with the planning of the UCI World Championships. In accordance with the latest recommendations made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that no gatherings with 50 people or more should take place for the next eight weeks to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, leaving no other viable option."
UCI World Championships and the Sports Authority will continue to closely monitor the situation and will work together on alternative dates. "Our commitment is to provide the BMX community with the best possible event once safety permits," said Peter Van den Abeele, UCI Sports Director.
The Sports Authority will issue a refund to anyone who has already purchased a ticket for the May event. For the most updated information, please continue to monitor the website at houstonbmx2020.com.
Any paid registration for Team USA will be refunded in full next week. Riders qualified for the 2020 team by way of the Phoenix or Houston qualifiers will be considered qualified for the postponed event. Upon announcement of the rescheduled world championship date we will give further direction on all other methods to qualify and the process to register for the 2020 team.
