First-Time Rider FAQ
Who can participate in BMX?
BMX is open to individuals of a variety of ages and various backgrounds. Skill level ranges from young children just learning to ride a balance bike to riders growing their skills at state and national races, to adults who just love to ride.
What kind of equipment or gear is needed to get started in BMX?
- Bike that is appropriate for BMX riding (Strider/Balance Bike, Cruiser, or Racing)
- Elbow/Knee Pads
- Protective Gloves
- Helmet w/Face Mask
- Closed-Toe Shoes
Riders who do not own a riding kit (riding specific clothing) should wear clothing that covers skin and allows for movement. Please be mindful to choose clothing that will not get caught on any gears or moving parts.
Do we need to own a BMX bike in order to start riding?
No. If you or your child just want to try the sport out, bikes and gear are available for loan at the track. Please visit the track during practice/registration times for more information.
Do we need to have a membership with USA BMX in order to participate at the track?
All riders must be registered as members of USA BMX in order to participate in practices or races. First-time riders may particpate in one practice or racing session with a free one-day temporary membership. Annual or Temporary memberships may be obtained through USA BMX or at the Silver Dollar BMX racetrack.
How much does a USA BMX membership cost?
Annual membership to USA BMX is $60.00 per rider, per season (January 1 - December 15) and includes a yearly subscription to the USA BMX publication PULL Magazine. USA BMX allows only one subscription per household, therefore the cost of additional riders in the same household is reduced.
Do you offer clinics for young riders?
Yes! We offer a few workshops and clinics throughout the year designed to introduce youth to BMX and help them grow their skills. Please follow SDBMX on Facebook or check back on our website for updates regarding clinics.
Is BMX safe?
Both USA BMX and Silver Dollar BMX regard safety as a top priority. All riders are required to abide by the Rules and Regulations put into place by the governing body of USA BMX. Additionally, the track and equipment are regularly inspected and maintained in order to ensure that conditions are as safe as possible for all riders.
