NEW RIDER FAQ's
Interested in trying out the Olympic Sport of BMX? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the sport and our track.
What do I need to race?
To get out on the track, riders need a helmet (we have some available to borrow), long pants, and long sleeves. We recommend gloves as well.
Is there a membership required?
Our track is sanctioned by USABMX. They provide our insurance and tabulate scoring for events across the country and Canada. A membership to USABMX is required, but they offer a free one-day membership to all new riders. This one-day membership can be converted to a free 7-day membership by creating a profile at www.usabmx.com. A full-year membership costs $60, which gives you a 1-year subscription to PULL magazine and allows you to race at any USABMX sanctioned track in the US and Canada. (There is also a 1-month trial membership for $30, which can be converted to a full-year for $35.)
Can I practice and not race?
Yes! Practice is $5, racing is $10 on standard, local race days. You can practice on race days or practice days.
Who will I race?
Riders compete against other riders of the same age and skill level. There are 3 proficiencies: Novice, Intermediate, and Expert. New riders are classified as Novice and, as their ability increases, they will move through the skill levels. This structure ensures that riders will consistently encounter the fairest level of competition while always being challenged.
Do I need a special racing bike?
ANY bike can be outfitted to suit BMX. This includes the beginner bike with smaller wheels or the mountain bike with gears. However, a few adjustments may be required to make them a bit more safe. The kickstand and any reflector brackets will need to be removed, adding to that safety aspect.
How often do I need to participate?
For many families, BMX is a weekly ritual, because BMX offers every rider the ability to participate at his or her own pace. You can choose to come whenever you like, as often as you like...to races, practices, or clinics. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the racers and spectators are free!
Where are you located?
We are located behind the main Hunterdon County Library and Municipal Complex on Route 12. Follow the park lots behind all the buildings to our track!
When are you open?
We are open Thursday nights for practice (and racing in the summer) from 5:30 p.m. until dark, and Saturday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m.
How long is the season?
We open in April and run through mid-November, depending on the weather.
